A LIFE DEVOTED TO COSTUME
Costume has been part of Monica Trappolini’s life since childhood.
Her professional journey began with a deep passion for fashion, costume and cinema, followed by rigorous technical training at the Accademia di Costume e Moda in Rome, where she developed a strong foundation in costume construction, pattern making, fabrics and craftsmanship.
This technical knowledge became an essential part of her approach: understanding not only how a costume should look, but how it can actually be constructed, worn and brought to life.
Over more than three decades, Monica has worked across cinema, television and theatre, collaborating with different directors, actors, creative departments and specialised costume workshops.
Her experience has been shaped by the diversity of the people and projects she has encountered throughout her career.
COSTUME AS STORYTELLING
For Monica, costume never exists simply to dress an actor.
It begins with the script.
She reads the screenplay first through the eyes of the costume designer, identifying every element that can reveal something about the characters. She then returns to the script to explore their identity: their gestures, social background, language, physicality, emotions, relationships and evolution throughout the story.
From this research comes the visual language of the character.
Colour becomes part of that language. Silhouette, fabric, hair, make-up and styling work together to create a complete visual identity.
The costume is therefore never an isolated element. It is part of the world of the film.
FROM VISION TO REALITY
Monica’s process combines intuition with technical knowledge.
Research may begin with paintings, photography, exhibitions, historical references or contemporary visual culture. From there, ideas develop into moodboards, sketches, fabrics and fittings.
Her technical training allows her to understand immediately whether an idea can actually be constructed, how a fabric will move, how a silhouette will behave on camera and how the costume will interact with the actor’s body.
The final result is always a dialogue between the original vision and the reality of the performer.
A COLLABORATIVE ART
Costume design is, above all, a collective art.
Monica works closely with directors, actors, cinematographers and production designers, sharing visual research and colour palettes throughout the creative process.
She believes that actors should be part of the costume journey. Her character moodboards are often shared with them before fittings, creating a dialogue that allows the performer to understand the visual world being created around them.
Her work with actors is based on empathy, sensitivity and experience, with the ultimate goal of allowing them to feel completely at ease within their character.
EXPERIENCE, INSTINCT AND A NETWORK BUILT OVER TIME
Thirty-four years in the industry have created something that cannot be learned from a manual: an extensive professional network and an instinctive knowledge of how to make things happen.
From specialised costume workshops and military tailoring to fashion houses, boutiques and suppliers, Monica knows where to look, whom to contact and how to organise the work efficiently—even when time and budget are limited.
Her collaborations with prestigious Italian fashion houses, including Giorgio Armani, Valentino, Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana, Brioni and Isaia, have also strengthened her understanding of contemporary luxury and its role in modern screen storytelling.
BEYOND THE COSTUME
What distinguishes Monica’s approach is the combination of creative vision, technical expertise, human sensitivity and decades of practical experience.
She continues to explore new forms of visual storytelling, new collaborations and new international contexts, bringing the perspective of an Italian costume designer with a deep understanding of fashion, craftsmanship and character.
